OUR PRE MARITAL COVENANT

Today we give thanks to God for the gift of knowing and loving one another. As we begin our time of engagement, we agree to begin a formal process of preparation that we pray will lead us to the goal of sacred and life-long Christian marriage, or the insight to postpone or cancel our plans for marriage.

We agree to make serious and sincere efforts to evaluate our relationship by taking an active role in the marriage preparation process. We understand that a marriage preparation program will be helpful to the degree that we participate in a whole-hearted and active manner. We will make this effort a very high priority. We know this will mean spending time studying recommended materials, writing personal answers to reflection questions, and additional time in extensive dialogue with each other.

We agree to prayer each day of our engagement for God’s guidance. We also agree that, each day we spend time together, we will pray together for God’s blessings on our efforts to prepare for marriage.

We agree that abstaining from sexual intercourse during this time of our engagement is the best way to prepare for making sexual intercourse in our marriage a very special sign of our marital commitment. With this in mind, we agree that we will abstain from words and actions with one another that will place us in danger of going "too far." For example, we agree to limit kissing and touching to "above the neck."

We agree to begin the practice of "family meals" whenever we are able to share meals together. This mean that we will see meals together as more than just eating food. We will begin with a prayer, we will avoid distractions and interruptions (no TV, no phone calls, etc.), we will understand meal time as a time for nurturing each other spiritually and mentally.

We agree to learn how to talk with each other about difficult topics and areas of disagreement in ways avoid hurts and misunderstandings.

We commit ourselves to honest conversations about this Pre Marital Covenant with those who are assisting us prepare for marriage, such as, our pastor and our sponsor couple.

We agree to this covenant, by the grace of God.
